Some might think of the lykoi as a creature from a horror book or a Tim Burtons movie, others might simply mistake it for being a totally different species altogether. Yes, we are talking about the Lykoi the wolf cat.

Love it or fear it, this remarkable cat has a mesmerising effect on the onlookers where one can’t take they’re eyes off it. Its scares coat long hairless face and big prominent eyes give it the appearance of a wolf/werewolf hence the name.

history

The lykoi has a recent history dating back to no more than a decade and a half. In 2010 a rescue worker Patti Thomas discovered two separate pairs of domestic short hair with the lykoi gene: (a recessive mutation in genes that causes hairlessness) and later in 2011 Dr Gobble after extensive research to rule out disease and sickness of the lykoi cats bred the species with black short hair cats to produce the lykoi breed that we see now.

Physical features

The Lykoi a.k.a the wolf cat has a long wedgy face with big round eyes, big pointy ears that at times give it a bat like resemblance, with a medium sized slender tail.

However most remarkable feature of the lykoi has to be its coat. The lykoi has a thin layer of hair with no under fur. Its hair follicles tend to fall off leaving it almost completely bare at times. However the unique feature of its hair is that it tends to regrow all throughout its life. The colours of thier coat range from black, black grey to burgundy. It is a medium size breed weighing no more than 8-12 pounds at the most, They are somewhat muscular with no tendency to put on extra weight, hence no known risk of obesity. the males tend to be bigger.

What the lykoi lacks in looks it makes up in personality. This breed is particularly known for its dog-like personality and traits. The lykoi cat is most likely to follow its human parent all day long. although they might be cautious of strangers at first and take time to warm up but once befriended the lykoi will be a friend for life. Lykois are sweet tempered felines, are extremely playful, and inquisitive by nature. The lykoi is compatable with children and adults alike, they can adjust in a multiple cats/dogs household, and can also enjoy being an only pet.

The lykoi’s native to texas missouri united states as the first recorded lykois were discovered here. Which goes to say that they are more accutomed to warmer temperatures. The lykoi does well being an indoor cat as the lack of fur to protect its skin can lead to many health and safety concerns. hence a warm and cosy apartment would make a great habitat for this particular feline.

health & well being

The lykoi is known to be a healthy breed with not many health issues the most common issue lykois are prone to is Hypothermia (low body temperature) and sunburns. which is mostly due to the lack of fur to protect thier skin.

The other recorded issue the lykoi has been known to get is Feline_immunodeficiency_virus, and diabetes.

The lykoi has been known to have a long life expectancy with the oldest recorded lykoi cat living upto 15 years.
